Global Outreach

Perimeter aims to catalyze great physics and help to develop new talent internationally, while raising Canada's profile as a research leader, particularly in Africa and South America.

South American Institute for Fundamental Research (SAIFR)

Since 2015, Perimeter has partnered with SAIFR, an emerging centre of excellence in theoretical physics located at São Paulo State University in Brazil. With several research areas and active outreach programs in common, Perimeter partners with SAIFR to support a new South American centre of excellence.

  • Several Perimeter faculty and researchers spend time at SAIFR teaching, doing research, and providing scientific advice.
  • Perimeter’s Outreach team assists SAIFR in developing its own outreach efforts, including delivering teacher training workshops for Brazilian educators.
  • Many Perimeter resource modules for secondary students have been translated into Portuguese and are available via the Educational Resources website. Modules are now also being translated into Spanish.

African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS)

Founded in South Africa in 2003 by Perimeter Director Emeritus and current Faculty member Neil Turok, AIMS is now a globally recognized centre of excellence for postgraduate education and research. There are five AIMS campuses across Africa: one each in Cameroon, Ghana, Rwanda, Senegal, and South Africa. Since 2010, Perimeter faculty, postdoctoral researchers, and staff have offered expertise to AIMS centres — via teaching, planning, and logistical support. Many AIMS alumni have also come to Perimeter to do advanced training and research.

Fields-AIMS-Perimeter Postdoctoral Fellowship

One-year postdoctoral fellowships awarded jointly by Perimeter Institute, the Fields Institute, and the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences - Next Einstein Initiative (AIMS-NEI). This is a unique opportunity for recent PhDs who are African nationals working in areas of mathematical sciences or fundamental theoretical physics. The goal is to support the careers of young researchers who have a commitment to advance science in Africa. The selected fellow will be invited to pursue their research either at Perimeter, the Fields Institute, or jointly at both institutions, depending on the fellow's research interests. Learn more.
