The Impact of Theoretical Physics

Theoretical physics is one of the highest-impact, lowest-cost areas of basic research. It advances our fundamental understanding of the universe while laying the foundation for future technologies. Many modern innovations — from solar cells and computers to wireless communication and diagnostic imaging — are rooted in theoretical physics discoveries.

Examples abound. James Clerk Maxwell's theory of electromagnetism, building on Michael Faraday's experiments, enabled electric motors, generators, and wireless communication technologies like Wi-Fi and cell networks. Albert Einstein's theories on gravity and relativity provided the framework for GPS technology and deepened our understanding of energy and fusion, key to addressing the world's energy challenges.

Perimeter's researchers continue this tradition, applying their analytical and technical skills to academia, industry, and society to propel human knowledge for the benefit of all.

Our Vision

To create the world’s foremost centre for research, graduate training, and educational outreach in theoretical physics, uniting public and private partners, and the world’s best scientific minds, in a shared enterprise to achieve breakthroughs that will transform our future.

Our Mission

Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics is an independent, resident-based research institute devoted to foundational issues in theoretical physics at the highest levels of international excellence. We strive to create a lively and dynamic research atmosphere where many approaches to fundamental questions, both orthodox and unorthodox, are pursued simultaneously, and where a balance between formal and phenomenological research is established. We are committed to collaborating with the surrounding academic community by providing outstanding educational and research opportunities for graduate students. Our world-class outreach program conveys the wonder and mystery of the universe and the importance of future scientific breakthroughs to the public in Canada and beyond.

Our Commitment to Indigenous Peoples

Perimeter Institute acknowledges that it is situated on the traditional territory of the Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee, and Neutral peoples. We are located on the Haldimand Tract, which was granted by the British to the Six Nations of the Grand River and the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation after the American Revolution in recognition of their role in the war and the loss of their traditional lands in upstate New York. Today, less than 5 percent of the original 950,000 acres remain Six Nations land, with only 6,100 acres remaining Mississaugas of the Credit land.

We thank the Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee, and Neutral peoples for hosting us on their land and honor their ongoing contributions to our community.
