Fields-AIMS-Perimeter Africa Postdoctoral Fellow

Job type: Postdoctoral Researchers

This fellowship is a unique position, created by the Fields Institute, Perimeter Institute (PI) and African Institute for Mathematical Sciences - Next Einstein Initiative (AIMS-NEI), intended for new and recent PhDs who are African nationals working in the areas of mathematical sciences or fundamental theoretical physics. The goal of this initiative is to support the careers of young researchers who have a commitment to advance science in Africa.

The fellowship will be for a fixed term of July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2025. Compensation is CAD$60,000 per year plus benefits as well as a CAD$2,500 travel / research fund, and a CAD$2,000 relocation fund. A visit of two months will be arranged at an AIMS centre in Africa as part of this fellowship. AIMS alumni will be the first considered for the Fellowships during the selection process.

Perimeter’s areas of strength include strong gravity, condensed matter theory, particle physics, quantum fields & strings, quantum gravity, quantum foundations, quantum information, mathematical physics and cosmology.

The Fields Institute supports research in pure and applied mathematics, statistics, and computer science, as well as collaboration between mathematicians and those applying mathematics in areas such as engineering, the physical and biological sciences, medicine, and economics and finance.

While research interests for the selected fellow may dictate either Perimeter or Fields as a home institute, they will be encouraged to spend time at both institutes.

Applicants should submit a covering letter, curriculum vitae, and a description of their research interests, and arrange for three letters of reference to be sent on their behalf. Applications can be made through MathJobs.org . The annual deadline for applications to the Fields-Perimeter Postdoctoral Fellowship is January 1 of each year . The covering letter should include a statement about the candidate’s interest in specific research programs at Fields or Perimeter, as well as names of faculty members at Fields, Perimeter, or Ontario universities with whom the candidate may be interested in working.

The Perimeter Institute is located west of Toronto, in Waterloo, Canada, and was founded in September 1999 as an independent institute supporting research in foundational areas of theoretical physics. The Institute offers an exceptional research environment and is currently staffed with full-time and part-time faculty members, Distinguished Visiting Research Chairs, Postdoctoral Researchers, Graduate Students, and exceptional master’s-level students participating in Perimeter Scholars International. Perimeter also hosts hundreds of visitors and conference participants throughout the academic year. For more information please visit www.perimeterinstitute.ca.

The Fields Institute is a centre for research and training in all areas of the mathematical sciences. The Institute provides a uniquely supportive and stimulating environment for research, innovation, and education. Its primary activities are Thematic Programs, of one to six months in length, hosting hundreds of participants each year. In addition, Fields supports a wide range of shorter activities such as workshops and conferences, mini-courses, summer schools, seminar series, as well as lecture series and other outreach activities. Fields is located in the heart of Toronto, in a building designed for mathematical communication. For more information please visit the website at www.fields.utoronto.ca.

AIMS is Africa’s first and biggest network of centres of excellence in mathematical sciences. The organization believes that Africa's youth is the continent's biggest asset and that the next Einstein will be African. Since 2003, AIMS has invested significantly in the creation of an impactful cohort of African professionals and researchers who will drive Africa’s transformation with a foundational education in mathematical sciences. For more information please visit the website at www.aims.ac.za.

The Fields Institute is a centre for mathematical research activity - a place where mathematicians from Canada and abroad, from academia, business, industry and financial institutions, can come together to carry out research and formulate problems of mutual interest. Our mission is to provide a supportive and stimulating environment for mathematics innovation and education. Learn more about us.
