Winner of Kitchen Wars contest aims to inspire a love of science
In September, Perimeter launched its inaugural Kitchen Wars contest – a low-stakes, high-fun video competition in which science teachers were asked to share their favourite homemade scientific demonstrations.
Teachers from around the world submitted videos explaining concepts from entropy to electricity to capillary action and more.
Viewers voted for their favourite video – and the results are in!
Congratulations to Sonia Castro, a physics teacher at Knightsbridge Schools International in Bogota, Colombia, whose video, "The rave of hot particles," was the top vote-getter.
"I want my students to enjoy thinking and develop a love for curiosity and inquiry," said Castro, explaining why she tinkers with homemade science demos. "I always have projects and tasks to think about, so I never get bored and all the details around me become inspiration for my work."
Castro often uses Perimeter's educational outreach materials in her classroom in Colombia.
"The material is inspiring and I have used it to structure my modern physics classes," she said. "Perimeter simplifies the concepts to the students' level without sacrificing the correct meaning, which is incredibly difficult to do for high school students."
