Reporting to the Director, Communications and Public Engagement, the Specialist, Media and Internal Communications plays a vital role in promoting Perimeter Institute’s mission and strengthening community connections.

Externally, the Specialist, Media and Internal Communications supports strategic media and public relations initiatives that elevate the visibility of Perimeter’s research, people, and organizational impact. Internally, this role crafts impactful communications that foster an informed, engaged, and unified workplace culture. As a key contributor of the communications team, the Specialist, Media and Internal Communications ensures Perimeter’s messaging remains consistent, timely, and effective across all platforms. Key responsibilities include developing persuasive media releases and advisories, securing media coverage, coordinating interviews, and monitoring media and social channels for opportunities and insights.

What You’ll Do:

Media and Public Relations

  • Leads media relations efforts to elevate Perimeter’s public profile by cultivating strong relationships with journalists, media outlets, and key influencers.
  • Crafts and distributes high-quality press releases, media advisories, and briefing materials that reflect Perimeter's strategic priorities and enhance its visibility with target audiences
  • Coordinates press opportunities, media interviews, and public engagements, working closely with researchers and senior leadership to ensure accurate and compelling storytelling
  • Maintains media contact lists, tracking coverage and engagement metrics, assessing reach and impact
  • Monitors media landscapes and emerging trends to provide timely insights and analysis to the Communications team, identifying risks and opportunities
  • Supports the planning and execution of media interviews, press briefings, and external events, including coordination with researchers and senior leadership
  • Contributes to the development of external messaging frameworks, ensuring alignment with Perimeter’s vision, mission, and strategic goals

Internal Communications

  • Develops and delivers clear, engaging internal communications that drive awareness, alignment, and connection with organizational developments, leadership announcements, employee engagement, and Perimeter culture
  • Coordinates the internal communications calendar and content delivery across multiple channels, including email bulletins, intranet, digital screens, etc.
  • Serves as the lead content coordinator for the intranet platform
  • Collaborates with internal stakeholders across the organization to support cross-functional messaging and build cohesion through storytelling, events, and communication campaigns
  • Acts as a point of contact for feedback and continuous improvement of internal communications tools and practices
  • Contributes and adheres to the communications accessibility guidelines in compliance with Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA).

Vendor Coordination, Project Coordination and Reporting

  • Provides day-to-day support and coordination to Perimeter’s PR agency
  • Coordinates integrated communications campaigns across internal and external channels, aligning key narratives and messages across media outreach and internal communications.
  • Tracks and reports on performance metrics for media and communications, using tools such as Newswise, Google Analytics and other subscriptions and Perimeter tools to inform data-driven decisions

What You Need:

  • Completed post-secondary education in communications, journalism, public relations, or a related field
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience in communications, ideally with exposure to both internal and media/PR functions
  • Strong writing, editing, and communication skills, with the ability to translate complex ideas for diverse audiences
  • Experience in communications planning, strategy, budgeting, and measurement
  • Professional and collaborative, with strong interpersonal skills and confidence to effectively engage and build rapport with individuals at all levels
  • Ability to inspire and engage colleagues acting as a trusted ambassador for Perimeter among media, influencer contacts, and diverse stakeholders both within and outside the Institute
  • Proven ability to generate leads and angles of interest to reporters and influencers in service/support of their audiences
  • Ability to distil complex subjects into accessible, accurate language
  • Familiarity with internal communication practices and tools, like media metrics and press release platforms within organizations
  • Organized and detail-focused, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • A background or strong interest in science and research environments is considered an asset
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office; experience with intranet platforms and email publishing tools
  • Fluency in French is considered an asset, though not required
  • Experience in non-profit and/or academic sectors is considered and asset
