Tara (Meg)… Human ranger / paladin
specializing in two weapon fighting.
merchant-trader and hereditary member of the ruling council of Glatek.
Although her father was insistent that she be well-educated to follow
in his footsteps, Tara was an indifferent student, and exasperated
most of her tutors with her relative lack of interest (after all, who
really needs to know the Elves' language these days?). However,
Stefan's cargomaster, himself a skilled swordsman,
saw great promise
in her, and trained her in weapons and self-defense. At the
cargomaster's suggestion, Stefan finally allowed Tara
to lead one of
his long-distance trading caravans to Winterhaven,
carrying woven
cloth, tea, coffee, and spices.
As she approached Winterhaven, Tara began having
disturbing dreams
about dragons attacking her home city. Then, along a forested stretch
of road, she felt compelled to stop at a shrine to Melora.
There,
her family and home from certain destruction is to band together with
other strong and able fighters. As she left the shrine and proceeded
into Winterhaven, Tara found herself reluctant to
believe Melora's
warning. How real could this threat be? Whoever heard of dragons
attacking cities?
In Winterhaven, Tara meets Orla,
her father's trading contact, and
completes her sale. At the inn and shops, she hears tales of other
river towns being destroyed. Just as Tara begins to accept that this
threat is real, new dreams come to her of forests burning, and Orla
tells her of a band of adventurers that are working to make the region
safer. With a new sense of purpose, Tara decides not to return home
with the caravan, and writes a letter to her father apologizing for
keeping the profits from the trade, but insisting that she is putting
them to good use. Tara hires local labor, and builds a stable and
storefront for a new messenger service based in Winterhaven,
adjacent
to Orla's trading post. In the coming weeks, she will
hire riders and
use her father's trading network to purchase fast, high-endurance
horses to travel regular circuits through the smaller outlying
settlements outside Winterhaven and Fallcrest as well as more distant
towns, picking up and delivering news and messages along the way.
