Chapter 2: Gaining Winterhaven’s Trust

kobold.jpgOn the way to Winterhaven, Kobolds ambush the heroes. The group dispatches the Kobolds quickly and makes its way to Winterhaven. They set themselves up with an Inn and stables for their horses. The townsfolk don’t give any information about a death cult in the area and the Lord of the town remains ignorant to any notions that dangerous cults operate in the area. The Lord has problems with a near by Kobold Lair and a missing Town’s Person. He gives the group directions to a dragon burial site were the Town’s Person was last known to be and also gives directions to the Kobold Lair. He asks for the groups help in finding the missing person and eliminating the Kobold’s. After talking to the town’s sage, Selena, Osgrym and Orla feel that the town’s folk know more about the death cult then they will talk about at this time. It seems weird that the sage will acknowledge that there is a Death Cult in the area when he was caught knowing through a cross-examination. Is he in on the Cult, is he afraid to talk against the Cult or is he simply untrusting of the PCs because he doesn’t know them yet?

With their newly acquired maps, the PCs leave town to investigate the Dragon Burial site. Along the way they are ambushed by Kobolds… AGAIN! These Kobolds are easy to defeat, but man are they ever getting annoying. After the skirmish, the Heroes make it to the Dragon Burial Site and are greeted by a Gnome who invites them closer to look at the remains that they have found. Wait a minute... A Gnome? Weren’t they moved from the Player’s Handbook to the Monster’s Manual? It turns out that the Gnome was setting up a trap. After a rough fight where Selena was injured badly, the Heroes defeat their enemies and rescue the bound and gagged Town’s Person. The Town’s Person gives the PCs a blessed locket in thanks and runs back home to his wife. Amongst the Gnome’s treasure is an ancient ornamental mirror that Kalarel hired the Gnome to Retrieve.

After a rest, The PCs head back to Winterhaven to let Orla set up some businesses and while they are there, they bump into Tara, another ranger looking for adventure. The group heads to the Kobold lair to clear the area and find that it is ran by a Goblin named Irontooth. Irontooth is also a worshipper of Orcus and a hireling of Kalarel. Apparently, Irontooth has handed over much of his plunder from trade caravans to Kalarel to help support opening the rift to Orcus’s home dimension, the Shadowfell.
