Senior Writer/Editor

Do you have a passion for telling stories about emerging ideas in theoretical physics? Are you an established science writer and editor looking to join a team of creative, science communication professionals at one of the world’s most prestigious research institutes? 

Perimeter Institute is seeking an experienced, broadly skilled science writer and editor to contribute to its award-winning print and electronic publications. The successful candidate will research, write and edit features and news articles for Perimeter’s websites; author fundraising proposals and supporting documents, and assist with public and government reports. They will also create or co-create videos, multimedia pieces, social media content, brochures, educational materials, corporate communications, and other writing/editing as required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Write and edit feature and news articles about Perimeter science and scientists for print and electronic media
  • Contribute to strategic communications planning 
  • Author and edit proposals and supporting materials for PI’s fundraising team, including cases for support, major gift proposals, etc. 
  • Gather news, research, author and fact-check articles, major reports, and other documents as required
  • Write, edit, and manage copy on Perimeter’s websites, perimeterinstitute.ca and insidetheperimeter.ca
  • Ideate, author, and help create social media content
  • Co-create video and/or multimedia, social media pieces about PI science and researchers 
  • Assist in the production of major reports and publications 
  • Edit, copy edit, and proofread documents for Publications, and for other departments/teams within the Institute as necessary
  • Assist with other communications activities (e.g., grants, award nominations and speeches), as assigned

Required Education, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Post Secondary Education within a relevant field (e.g., journalism, physics, English)
  • Minimum of five years’ professional experience as a writer/editor, preferably with experience working in an academic or research-based institute
  • A passion for science
  • A track record of excellence in authoring and creating articles, interviews, and/or videos and multimedia presentations on science 
  • Demonstrated ability to “find the story” and to convey it persuasively and engagingly to various audiences 
  • Ability to grasp new scientific concepts and convey them effectively to non-scientists in various media (print, video, etc.)
  • Excellent research, reporting, and editorial skills
  • Thorough understanding of how to tailor documents to their intended media (e.g., web, print, social media, etc.) and their intended audience (scientist, general public, private funder, government, etc.) 
  • Proven track record of meeting tight deadlines and managing multiple short- and long-term projects 

Desired Assets

  • Scientific training; preferably at the graduate level or above
  • Print/online/broadcast science writing experience for lay and/or scientific audiences
  • Experience with visual storytelling, interviewing for print and broadcast, on-camera interviewing, editing, etc.
  • Experience in writing successful funding proposals 
  • Openness, creativity, and enthusiasm to collaborate with other writers
  • A network of contacts in traditional and new media
  • Speechwriting experience
  • Experience working with researchers on large- and small-scale scientific grants
  • Experience in researching and writing major reports, e.g., annual reports, government reports, position papers, research summaries, briefing documents, etc.
