Senior Systems Administrator - 6 Month Contract

Perimeter Institute is seeking to fill a six-month contract in the role of Senior Systems Administrator within our Technology Services team. As a Senior Systems Administrator you will ensure the delivery of technology services to support academic, scientific, and administrative activities at PI. In this role, you will provide 2nd level and 3rd level technical support in the delivery of IT infrastructure solutions (on-premises and in the cloud), middleware applications, and communication technologies.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the configuration, process automation, maintenance and monitoring of the day-to-day operations of Windows and Linux servers, virtual machines and hypervisors, network devices, storage and backup systems, and cloud resources
  • Create and update documentation of system configurations, systems changes, and operational procedures following the Technology Services department standards
  • Manage and implement systems patches for all on-premises and cloud systems
  • Manage and troubleshoot on-premises and cloud virtual environments
  • Regularly review infrastructure (systems and network devices) logs
  • Participate in audits, tests and reviews of systems and network architectures
  • Conduct research, make recommendations, and deliver installations of commercial and open-source infrastructure solutions
  • Provide operational support for identity and access management (Active Directory) and information security (firewalls, VPN, and IDS) systems and services
  • Monitor and support centralized services and systems, including printing and communication systems
  • Provide support for hardware and other equipment located at PI’s data centres (PI building, UW colocation facility)
  • Respond and investigate information security incidents
  • Participate in emergency incident response procedures and digital forensics
  • Review and implement technical, administrative, and physical controls to address security threats and vulnerabilities
  • Assist with the implementation and monitoring of security policies to different information security components (firewalls, routers and switches, servers, virtual devices, etc.)
  • Recommend and enforce information security industry standards and best practices related to operating systems, servers, and networks
  • Communicate effectively with representatives from a variety of stakeholder groups, as well as with vendors’ sales and technical teams
  • Participate in the 24/7 technology services on-call rotation
  • Perform other duties as assigned and participate in project teams as required.

Knowledge, Education and Abilities Required

  • 7+ years in IT services and at least 5 years of experience providing L2/L3 IT infrastructure support and maintenance (hardware/software for servers, network, storage, and virtualization)
  • College diploma or university degree in an IT-related field, complemented by IT-related industry certifications with a focus on management of on-premises/cloud systems
  • Advanced technical knowledge and experience in IT infrastructure related to cloud and on-premises environments
  • Expert knowledge of networking hardware, software, protocols, and communication technologies
  • Expert knowledge of Linux and Windows operating systems
  • Familiarity with common middleware applications (Apache, Tomcat, etc.)
  • Ability to install and program highly complex network hardware and software
  • Ability to identify highly complex network problems and to develop complex hardware and/or software solutions
  • Ability to work closely with vendors’ sales and technical teams
  • Strong organizational skills, accuracy, and attention to detail
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, ability to handle multiple priorities, work under short deadlines and manage changing priorities
  • Evening or weekend work may be required for special events and on-call activities (system maintenance/upgrades, project work, system failures, participation in cybersecurity incident response, etc.)
  • Occasional lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of equipment and materials of different weights (up to 130 pounds), working in awkward physical positions and confined spaces (IT closets, computer racks), and using ladders to work on top of computer racks or access equipment on ceilings is required
