This year’s DSE gathering attracted over 4,000 attendees and included the independently judged “Apex & Content Awards” program. The competition involved 88 entrants, representing 18 countries – with Perimeter Institute’s info wall winning silver in the Education & Healthcare category.
Perimeter shares this honour with its partners on the info wall project, including:
- Christie, creators of the unique Christie® MicroTiles® display technology, who collaborated on Perimeter’s messaging solutions
- Teeple Architects, designers of the new Stephen Hawking Centre at Perimeter Institute, who maximized the flexibility of the digital canvas system
- RP Visual Solutions, fabricators of a rear frame that consolidated 84 separate tiles
- Conrad Entertainment, who worked with Perimeter’s in-house web and graphics artist to generate initial templates, artwork, and scientific images for the launch-period messaging
- Westbury National Show Systems, Perimeter’s key audio-visual consultant, which integrated all of the design, technology, and messaging requirements into a successful and award-winning display
About the Project
Perimeter – with its world-class theoretical physics research, training, and educational outreach programs – required an impactful communications technology in the main entrance of the Stephen Hawking Centre at Perimeter Institute. The purpose of the info wall is to deliver a variety of messages that can welcome, inform, and build a sense of community among the Institute’s many scientists, visiting researchers, young scholars, educators, staff, supporters, and general public visitors.
The technological solution involved Christie® MicroTiles® with backlit LED illumination and digital light projection. The tiles provided Teeple Architects with maximum design flexibility and delivered Perimeter a high impact, low maintenance, and customizable messaging platform. The initial programmed messages were seen by over 10,000 in attendance during the grand opening of the new Stephen Hawking Centre at Perimeter Institute in September 2011. Moving forward, Perimeter’s small graphics and web team is able to leverage a portfolio of display zones, templates, backgrounds, and dynamically-fed information to share changing messages with all audiences.
Partnering for Success
John Coniglio of Westbury National Show Systems Ltd., who synthesized the desires of all the info wall partners, said, “It has been a pleasure to help the team realize the info wall vision through the blending of design, technology, software, and, naturally, the communications needs of the Institute. The collaboration on this project has been very rewarding and it was my privilege to represent the group at the Digital Signage Expo and see everyone’s efforts honoured with this Apex Award.”
Chris Gibbs, who oversees the DSE and Apex Awards said, "It is our unique pleasure and privilege to be able to provide a forum that not only nurtures and recognizes these amazing leaps forward, but also one in which all of us can come together and truly appreciate the work that is being produced in our field worldwide. That is why we are pleased to present the 2012 winners who have distinguished themselves in this way."
