Research Interests

I am broadly interested in the development of new algorithms to address otherwise-intractable problems in theoretical physics, particularly in domains where computational approaches have not traditionally been employed.

My PhD research was in numerical relativity, which deals with the simulation of strong gravitational fields e.g. around black holes. During that time I worked both on the development of binary black hole merger simulations, and on the porting of existing code to run on GPU-accelerated computers.

Here at Perimeter I am working to use approaches from tensor networks, a set of techniques for the simulation of quantum mechanical systems, to study quantum fields within strong gravitational fields. The coupling between quantum mechanics and gravity produces novel effects which, even when understood qualitatively, are difficult to study in quantitative detail. Our new algorithms will help to remedy this situation.
