BOOT CAMP FOR PHYSICS TEACHERS BEGINS AT PERIMETER INSTITUTE

More than 40 physics teachers from around the world will meet at Perimeter Institute for EinsteinPlus, a one-week intensive workshop on quantum physics, special relativity, cosmology, and other cutting-edge fields from July 5-11, 2015.

July 2, 2015 (Waterloo, Ontario, Canada) – They are coming from around the world – from Estonia and India, the United States and the United Kingdom, Germany and New Zealand, and all across Canada – to learn more about teaching physics. More than 40 secondary-level teachers will converge on Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics (PI) July 5-11 for EinsteinPlus, an intensive week-long workshop that connects modern physics concepts to the classroom.

Over the course of the week, participants will learn about the latest developments in physics from expert researchers at the forefront of their fields, including Niayesh Afshordi, Cliff Burgess, and David “Doddy” Marsh. The goal is to pass along the best teaching practices and pedagogy for teaching modern physics concepts. Participants will also learn about PI’s in-class resources for tackling tricky physics concepts, develop strategies for anticipating and answering the toughest student questions, and visit the Institute for Quantum Computing at the University of Waterloo.

“As a former physics teacher myself, I know how tough it can be to explain cutting-edge concepts like black holes, dark matter, and particle physics,” says Greg Dick, Director of Educational Outreach at PI. “That’s why we created EinsteinPlus – to turn the scientific expertise at Perimeter Institute into accessible concepts and activities that excellent teachers can use to spark excitement about modern physics among their students.”

More information on the EinsteinPlus program, including important dates, eligibility requirements, and a full list of 2015 participants, can be found at http://www.perimeterinstitute.ca/einsteinplus.
