The Black Hole Bistro is a private retreat located inside Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics which operates for resident scientists, visiting researchers and conference and workshop guests, who quite often continue their discussions and collaborations over a fine meal.

Some of the most exciting research at the Institute is based on the study of black holes; consequently Black Hole Bistro was a fitting name and unanimous hit. After opening on January 7, 2005 the restaurant has steadily grown to become the social hub of Perimeter. It provides a comfortable getaway from research offices and serves as a focal point for entertaining all guests. Bistro staff welcome many of the world’s greatest scientific minds to their tables. The daily changing menu takes advantage of seasonal produce and draws inspirations from all over the world. We have many local partners who supply us delicious and unique products to use.

Black Hole Bistro Front of House Assistant Manager is the leader and coordinator of the FOH staff during daily operations. They are responsible for assisting the Front of House Manager in setting and monitoring clear goals and job expectations of Bistro servers. The assistant must possess analytical skills. They should assist in regular reviews of Bistro systems and make recommendations for any desired changes. The assistant manager will assist in reviewing data regarding KPI’s and make suggestions to operation to help the team achieve set operational goals. The candidate should feel empowered to develop new concepts and products independently.

A large portion of the candidate’s time will entail participating and setting up/cleaning up after meal times. They should be able to work competently as part of all teams within the Bistro. Their level of service and work ethic should be an inspiration to the FOH servers.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participate in completion of server duties as needed:
    • Support established Bistro concept
    • Accurately take, process and charge guest orders
    • Comprehensive knowledge of all items on daily menus
    • Demonstrate your ability to contribute as an active team member
    • Complete daily duties as outlined in “Daily Duties Checklist”
    • Complete weekly duties as outlined in “Weekly Duties Checklist”
  • Report and consult with the Manager and Head Chef on a daily basis
  • Direct workflow of FOH servers on a daily basis
  • Responsible for FOH server introduction and training for new employees
  • Booking and planning of internal catering events
  • All other related duties as required or requested

Key Requirements:

  • College diploma or related program in hospitality or food and beverage management is considered an asset for this position
  • Ability to work shifts and split shifts are required, including: days, evenings and weekends as needed by the Black Hole Bistro
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Gmail
  • Previous experience in supervisory role and managing staff
  • Knowledge of beer, wine, coffee, tea sales/service
  • Knowledge of upscale dining service techniques
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Motivated to work independently and drive your own responsibilities
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment
  • Smart serve certified
