Supported by the Senior Manager, Advancement Operations the Prospect Management Research Analyst’s key responsibilities include the identification of potential new prospects, providing input to Advancement officers regarding potential prospect capacity and affinity, and preparing briefing memos (for Advancement fundraisers, PI fundraising volunteers, PI senior leadership team and scientists as needed), comprehensive profiles and other forms of research support for the Advancement department. In addition, the individual is responsible for the interpretation, analysis and delivery of information pertaining to all major donors cleared for cultivation, solicitation or stewardships by Advancement fundraisers, for accurate maintenance of CRM records, and performing general research tasks as assigned.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Prospect Research Analysis:

  • Manage all research processes including prospect analysis during screening processes to determine affinity, capacity and inclination of prospects
  • Using a range of primary as well as secondary sources, including electronic and hardcopy, to gather and verify contact information, donation history, funding preferences, affiliation with Perimeter, employment history, business relationships, community involvement, and any other relevant information on identified prospects, including individuals, foundations and corporations
  • Determine estimated giving capacity of potential prospects by analyzing wealth indicators such as annual income, net assets, stock shares and property value to determine the estimated gift amount of a proposal/request
  • Conduct ongoing media scanning (local and national newspapers, business publications, and other printed and electronic sources) to keep abreast of business developments, to gather information on current donors, and to identify new prospect possibilities
  • Incorporate information gathered through media scanning into CRM, and communicate pertinent new information to the Advancement team as appropriate
  • Lead the recommendation and implementation of new research projects, resources and processes that support the identification and development of leadership level donors

Prospect Management:

  • Conduct meetings with Advancement staff regarding pipeline moves management and offer advice regarding the movement of prospects
  • Match prospect interests with Perimeter Institute’s organizational and strategic priorities
  • Record prospect tracking and coordination of moves management through the use of CRM software
  • Liaise with Relationship Managers to ensure contact information, contact reports and future activities / strategies are captured in CRM
  • Write and edit profiles, briefing notes and other research products on prospects, donors, board members, and event attendees for fundraisers, senior staff and volunteers

Departmental Administration and Excellence:

  • Participate actively in preparing for guest visits and events
  • Create an annual research plan for the Advancement Department, and track and report on progress
  • Support the Director of Major Gifts in guiding evaluation of the prospect pool and progress of moves management to meet set activity goals for the department (calls, visits, proposals, renewals, lapsed measurement) that facilitate team efforts to develop prospects to become donors
  • Maintain membership with the National and International professional associations for Prospect Research: APRA and APRA-Canada
  • Other duties as needed

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Bachelor’s Degree and a minimum of five years dedicated fundraising experience, preferably in a not for profit environment
  • Demonstrated experience of research strategies using commercial and public online services which may include but are not limited to: iWave PRO, INK Research, Imagine Canada, Marquis Who's Who, DowJones, SEDAR, BIG Online
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the information that is useful to decision making and strategy formulation through all stages of the solicitation cycle;
  • Ability to analyze large amounts of information and extract what is relevant to the fundraising process, and then communicate key information clearly, concisely, and accurately
  • Skilled at maximizing use of online databases, tools, and resources to locate and compile business and biographic information; familiarity with biographical and corporate resources, databases, and other reference materials and the ability to read and interpret financial information
  • Familiarity of relevant privacy legislation and ethical obligations under the Donor Bill of Rights and APRA’s ethics and professional standards is desirable
  • Excellent communications skills (oral and written) and listening skills
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office and all its applications and Internet
